Day of Surgery
From hospital arrival to waking up
The day usually flows through registration, the preparation area, the operating theatre, and the recovery unit. Timing can run longer than planned — often for safety, sequencing, or technical reasons.
The team does not leave you alone. You can ask questions again before anesthesia.

Come at the time you were given (often a few hours before surgery). ID and paperwork are completed and a wristband is applied.

Hospital gown, intravenous access, skin preparation if needed, and an anesthesia review. Follow rules about dentures, jewelry, and nail polish.

The surgical team greets you and completes a safety checklist (correct patient, side, and procedure). After anesthesia you will not remember the operation.

Pulse, blood pressure, oxygen, and pain are monitored. Nausea and a sore throat can occur. When stable, you move to the ward.

After surgery the surgeon or team updates relatives. If timing stretches, do not panic; many delays are for safety or theatre flow.
