Thyroid Disease — Thyroid Goiter
Enlarged gland — pressure or cosmetic concerns
Goiter is enlargement of the thyroid—diffuse or nodular. Iodine deficiency, autoimmunity, multinodular change, or dysfunction may contribute. Compression (swallowing, breathing), rapid growth, suspicious nodules, or cosmetic concern influence whether surgery is discussed.
Key points
- Compression symptomsTap for details · key note inside
Dysphagia, neck pressure, positional dyspnea, voice change. Substernal extension may need CT for surgical planning.
- FunctionTap for details
Goiter may occur with normal, low, or high hormone levels. Hyperthyroidism should be controlled before elective surgery.
- Surgery indicationsTap for details
Symptomatic compression, suspicious nodules, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, or significant cosmetic burden in selected patients.
- Surveillance without surgeryTap for details
Stable goiter may be followed with exam, TSH, and ultrasound—millimeter drift alone does not always change the plan.
