Liver Disease — FNH and Hepatocellular Adenoma
Benign solid liver lesions
Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and hepatocellular adenoma are benign solid lesions—distinct from hemangioma. MR often separates them. FNH is usually observed. Adenoma size, subtype, bleeding risk, and (rarely) malignant potential guide follow-up or surgery—especially with hormone exposure in women.
Key points
- FNHTap for details
Central scar pattern on MR is classic. Asymptomatic lesions are usually watched; large symptomatic ones may discuss resection.
- AdenomaTap for details
Risk rises with size, growth, androgen exposure, and certain subtypes. Bleeding or malignant transformation is rare but real—plan is individualized.
- Why classification mattersTap for details
Benign does not mean ignore. Wrong label leads to wrong treatment—especially confusing adenoma with hemangioma.
- Who needs closer follow-up?Tap for details · key note inside
Men, large lesions, beta-catenin–activated subtypes, or pregnancy plans may shift toward resection regardless of size.
